What is the resolution of an image?

When printed, an image occupies a given area. Its resolution is the ratio between its width (or height) expressed in pixels and the width (or height) of the area it occupies.

Resolution is expressed in pixels per inch, or dots per inch, abbreviated as dpi. An inch measures 2.54 cm. So, for example, when printed on a 2.54 cm wide area, an image with 500 pixels width has a resolution of 500 dpi.

In printing, for printing a book, the resolution of an image is satisfactory if it is greater than or equal to 300 dpi. So in the previous example, when printed on a 2.54 cm wide area, the image (with 500 dpi resolution) has a satisfactory resolution.

During book layout generation by the Website, the area occupied by an image is calculated so that its resolution is always greater than or equal to 300 dpi. Therefore, in the previous example, the largest width of the surface that can be occupied by the image (with 500 pixels width) will be 4.2 cm. The result is simply obtained by multiplying by the factor 2.54 / 300.

Here are some other examples of the largest width (or height) that an image can occupy when printed, based on its width (or height) in pixels:

Width in pixels Printed width
500 4.2 cm
1000 8.5 cm
1500 12.7 cm
2000 16.9 cm
2500 21.2 cm
3000 25.4 cm
3500 29.6 cm
4000 33.9 cm
Why do I need to add images larger than 400 x 400 pixels?

When the size of an image is too small (200 x 200 pixels for example) an alert is displayed: “Please choose a larger image. The image size is 200 x 200 pixels. It must be larger than 400 x 400 pixels.”

To understand how size of an image, expressed in pixels, determines the largest area that can be occupied by that image when printed, see the question “What is the resolution of an image?”.

The minimum required image size is arbitrarily set to 400 x 400 pixels. For example, a 200 x 200 pixels image prints on an area only 1.7 cm wide. Readers generally prefer more visible images!

Can I correct spelling mistakes in a post?

Reliez‑vous does not provide a spell checker.

To check the spelling of a post, we suggest that you copy/paste its text into a software with a spell checker (OpenOffice for example) or into an online spell checker website (Scribens for example).
